Over the Easter holidays, I took an interest in interacting with this so-called ChatGPT tool and I was amazed by just how the field of AI has gathered huge strides towards its perfection. But before I share with you some of the extraordinary discoveries I found on this platform, let’s delve deeper into understanding what ChatGPT is and why the fuss.
Introduction
You’ve definitely heard about Siri or Google Assistant and you’ve probably used one or both. These are some of the examples of Artificial intelligence(AI) tools that use some set of algorithms to assist humans in their day-to-day activities like navigation, weather, reminders, and much more. Now ChatGPT is the new kid on the block but it has taken a slightly different path as far as AI is concerned. To cut you some slack, let me explain what ChatGPT is from my understanding. ChatGPT(Chat Generative Pre-trained Transformer) is a language model developed by Open AI company. It is designed to generate human-like text responses in real-time conversations with users. ChatGPT is trained in diverse text data allowing it to generate responses to a wide range of prompts and questions. It can be used in a variety of applications such as customer service, virtual assistant, language translations, content creation, and so many other fields.
Use Cases of ChatGPT:
ChatGPT has found applications in numerous domains, including:
1. Customer Service: ChatGPT can be used in chatbots or virtual assistants to provide customer support, answer frequently asked questions, and assist with troubleshooting or issue resolution. Its ability to understand and respond to user queries conversationally makes it a powerful tool for improving customer service experiences.
2. Virtual Assistants: ChatGPT can serve as a personal virtual assistant, helping users with tasks such as scheduling appointments, setting reminders, sending emails, and more. Its language generation capabilities make it a versatile and efficient assistant in handling various tasks on behalf of the user.
3. Content Generation: ChatGPT can assist with content creation tasks, such as generating blog posts, social media content, product descriptions, and more. Its ability to generate text in different styles and tones allows it to cater to different content needs, making it a valuable tool for content creators.
4. Language Translation: ChatGPT’s language understanding and generation capabilities make it suitable for language translation tasks. It can understand text in one language and generate translations in another, enabling communication across different languages.
Account
I created an account on the Open AI website. The process is pretty simple: You only need to include your name, email address, and a phone number then Open AI will send you an activation code to your provided phone number. After activation, you will be required to create your password then you are in. Also, you can choose to register by your Google account which to me I found to be much easier.
After logging into my account, I came to a platform that looked like the one in the image below. On the top left corner, there is a rectangular box that lets you add a new chat. Right below that box are some of the chat histories and other interactive options.
You can choose between a Free plan or a pay plan dubbed “ChatGPT Plus”. The advantages of the ChatGPT Plus plan over the Free plan are Chats availability even when demands are high; faster response speed and priority access to new features. I went with the free plan of course.
Let’s see some of the responses I got by asking different kinds of questions:
Write me a song about Kenya
Explain Quantum Mechanics
Write me a Cover Letter
Limitations
While this newfound AI venture is great in so many aspects, I came across a few limitations. For instance, I noticed that after prolonged usage, the platform would freeze and I had to restart the whole page over and over again. I don’t know if this was a result of the Free plan or just the site misbehaving.
Another issue with the site is its slow adaptability to some of the latest slang. For example, I asked ChatGPT what a rosecoco is and the answer I got was not my expectation (Don’t laugh).
Conclusion
The future of AI is coming faster and smarter. While we should be glad that this venture is making our work easier, we should also be worried about them taking up our jobs and minimizing human creativity.
